Chia and Hemp Protein Pudding Using 13 Seeds

The Hemp Industry in Australia is quickly developing with Hemp Foods leading the way, as the seeds offer a range of plant-based nutritional benefits.

In the December Vegan Box, we have teamed up with 13 Seeds Hemp Farm to bring you their Hemp Hearts!

The 13 Seeds Story

Terry Memory and Gemma Lynch-Memory founded 13 Seeds Hemp Farm in 2015 after a decade of research into the potential of the Hemp Plant to be a viable Agribusiness crop for their farm in Southern Tasmania.

In 2004 one of their six young children developed chronic Psoriasis which left him covered in numerous skin lesions. In an attempt to find a cure for their son’s condition they sought the help of Melbourne’s top Psoriasis specialist. He prescribed a cream that showed great initial results but was made from over 25 different ingredients.

Terry and Gemma believed that it was only one of the compounds at work so began the exhaustive task of isolating each ingredient and using that on their son exclusively to see if they could attain the same results. As they had already done some early research into the applications of Hemp Oil as both a topical and internal healing agent, they were keen to try it on their son in isolation.

They found after only two weeks of both topical (directly on the lesions) and internal (taking one tablespoon morning and night) that their son’s Psoriasis almost completely cleared. When coupled with Vitamin D therapy (direct Sunlight) his Psoriasis completely disappeared.

And it was in this moment, 13 Seeds was born!

1. What’s so great about hemp seeds for vegans?

One concern of vegan diets is that we can have a higher risk of developing nutritional deficiencies such as iron, zinc, essential fatty acids and protein. The good news is that Hemp Seeds contain high amounts of all of these essential nutrients making it the perfect addition the vegan diet.

2. A great source of essential fatty acids

Essential fatty acids (omega 3 and omega 6) are crucial for good health. Essential fatty acids are found in high amounts in oily fish and can be difficult to obtain in the vegan diet. Hemp Seed Oil however contains the perfect ratio (1:4) of omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids. These fatty acids also play an important role in brain health and have anti-inflammatory properties.

3. A complete protein

We all know that protein is a macronutrient that we need in large amounts and is essential for growth and recovery and many other important functions in the body. Protein can sometimes be deficient in a vegan diet. Hemp Seed protein however contains a whopping 42.1g of protein per 100g. Furthermore, Hemp Seeds contain all 9 essential amino acids making it a complete protein!

Unlike other plant-based proteins, Hemp Seed protein has the added benefits of essential fatty acids and antioxidants. Hemp Seed protein is also easily digested so you don’t have to worry about gas or bloating that you may get from other plant-based proteins such as soy protein.

4. Rich in essential minerals!

Iron is an essential mineral for red blood cell production, when our body doesn’t get enough iron in the diet this can result in fatigue. Iron can be harder to obtain in the vegan diet with the exclusion of red meat. Rather than eating your weight in spinach, Hemp Seeds can help to increase your iron intake without taking a ridiculous amount.

High amounts of zinc can also be found in red meat and may be deficient in a vegan diet. Zinc is an essential mineral and plays an important role in maintaining a healthy immune system. Hemp Seeds are also an easy way to increase your zinc intake, so you don’t have to stress over Zinc either!

5. High in fiber!

One of the added benefits of Hemp Seeds is its high fiber content. Fiber helps keep your digestive system healthy!

What other products do we offer and where can we get them?

From what started with solely Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Oil capsules, the 13 Seeds range now comprises of 13 different Hemp Foods. The range includes breakfast cereals, falafels, seeds, hemp flour, honey’s and drinking chocolates!

These goodies are stocked in select health food stores around Australia, however the best way to get your hands on the range is direct from Gemma and Terry at www.13seeds.com.au!
